The basics

What are traditional braces?

Traditional braces use small brackets bonded to each tooth, connected by a wire that gently moves your teeth into the right position over time. They're the most tried-and-tested way to straighten teeth and correct bite problems.

We offer both metal and ceramic brackets. Metal braces are smaller and more comfortable than ever, while ceramic brackets blend with your tooth colour for a more discreet look. Both deliver the same precise, controlled movement.

The gold standard for complex cases. Predictable results, proven over decades.

Fixed braces work around the clock, so there's nothing to remember to wear and no risk of losing aligners. Your dentist adjusts the wire at regular appointments to keep everything moving in the right direction.

Common cases

What can traditional braces fix?

Fixed braces handle a wide range of orthodontic issues, from mild crowding to complex bite problems.

01

Crowded teeth

When there isn't enough room for your teeth to sit straight, braces gradually create space and guide each tooth into the correct position.

02

Gaps and spacing

Braces close gaps between teeth by drawing them together steadily, whether it's a single space or multiple gaps across the arch.

03

Overbite

When upper front teeth overlap the lower teeth too much, braces reposition both arches to bring the bite into proper alignment.

04

Underbite

When lower teeth sit in front of the upper teeth, braces correct the jaw relationship and bring everything into the right position.

05

Crossbite

When some upper teeth sit inside the lower teeth instead of outside, braces widen the arch and correct the alignment.

06

Open bite

When front teeth don't meet when you close your mouth, braces move them into contact so you can bite and chew properly.

The fitting process itself doesn't hurt, but your teeth may feel tender for a few days afterwards as they start to move. Over-the-counter painkillers and soft foods usually help. After each adjustment, you might feel some pressure for a day or two.

Most people wear braces for 18 to 24 months, though this varies depending on how much movement is needed. We'll give you a more accurate estimate at your consultation once we've examined your teeth.

Avoid hard foods like nuts and ice, sticky foods like toffee and chewing gum, and anything you have to bite into with your front teeth like apples or crusty bread. We'll give you a full list when your braces are fitted.

You'll need to visit us every 4 to 8 weeks for adjustments. These appointments are quick, usually around 20 minutes, and let us check your progress and tighten the wires to keep your teeth moving.

Traditional braces start from £2,500. The exact cost depends on the complexity of your case and how long treatment will take. We offer flexible payment plans to help spread the cost, and we'll confirm pricing at your consultation.

Yes, but we recommend wearing a mouthguard for contact sports to protect both your braces and your mouth. We can provide a custom mouthguard that fits over your braces comfortably.
