Common dental emergencies include severe toothache, knocked-out teeth, broken or chipped teeth, lost fillings or crowns, abscesses, and bleeding that won't stop. If you're experiencing any of these, call us immediately.
We prioritise emergency patients and will do everything possible to see you on the same day, usually within a few hours of your call.

Persistent, severe pain that won't respond to painkillers needs immediate attention. We'll identify the cause and provide relief, often on the same day.

Knocked-out tooth
If a tooth is completely knocked out, keep it moist in milk or saliva and call us immediately. The sooner we see you, the better chance of saving it.

Broken or chipped tooth
A severely broken tooth can expose nerves and cause significant pain. We can repair or restore the tooth and prevent further damage or infection.

Lost filling or crown
A missing filling or crown leaves your tooth vulnerable and often painful. We'll replace it quickly to protect the tooth and restore comfort.

Dental abscess
A painful swelling or pus-filled bump near a tooth is a sign of infection. This needs urgent treatment to prevent the infection spreading.

Uncontrolled bleeding
Bleeding after an injury, extraction, or gum problem that won't stop after 15 minutes of pressure needs immediate professional care.

Handling a dental emergency

Toothache
Rinse with warm salted water and take ibuprofen if you can. Do not put aspirin directly on the tooth. Call us — toothache that doesn't settle needs to be seen promptly.
Dental abscess
A throbbing pain with facial swelling, a bad taste, or fever can mean an abscess. This needs urgent treatment — infection can spread quickly if left.
Lost filling or crown
Keep the area clean and avoid hard or very hot food on that side. A pharmacist can provide temporary dental cement to cover it until you see us.
Knocked-out tooth
Pick up the tooth by the crown, not the root. If dirty, rinse gently with milk or saliva. Keep it moist and get to us within an hour — speed is everything.
Broken or chipped tooth
Rinse your mouth with warm water and save any pieces you can find. If there's sharp pain or a large break, call us — we will see you as soon as possible.
Broken brace or wire
Cover any sharp or protruding wire with orthodontic wax to protect your cheek. Do not try to pull or cut it yourself. Call us and we will advise next steps.
Bleeding gum or lip
Apply firm, gentle pressure with a clean cloth for 10 to 15 minutes. If bleeding does not slow after 20 minutes, go to A&E. Minor cuts usually settle quickly.
Facial swelling
Swelling around the jaw, cheek, or under the eye is a sign of infection and should not be left. Call us immediately — if we cannot see you, go to A&E the same day.
Something stuck between teeth
Try dental floss gently — never use a pin or sharp object as you risk damaging the gum. If it won't shift and is causing pain or swelling, give us a call.
