What is a dental bridge?
A dental bridge fills the gap left by one or more missing teeth using a fixed restoration anchored to the healthy teeth on either side. The result looks, feels, and functions just like your natural teeth.
A bridge consists of one or more artificial teeth, known as pontics, held in place by crowns fitted over the teeth on either side of the gap. Those supporting teeth are called abutments. The whole structure is cemented permanently — there is nothing to take in and out.
A bridge gives you back a complete smile, restores your ability to chew normally, and prevents the surrounding teeth from shifting into the gap.
Treatment takes two appointments. At the first, the abutment teeth are prepared and an impression is taken. A temporary bridge is fitted while your permanent one is made. At the second visit, the finished bridge is checked for fit and colour before being cemented in place.
When might you need a bridge?
A bridge is one of the most reliable ways to replace a missing tooth. Here are the situations where it is often the right choice.
A missing tooth
Whether lost through decay, injury, or extraction, a missing tooth leaves a gap that can affect your bite, your speech, and your confidence. A bridge fills it permanently.
02
A tooth beyond saving
When a tooth is too damaged or decayed to restore with a crown or filling, extraction followed by a bridge is often the most practical long-term solution.
03
Preventing teeth from shifting
Gaps left by missing teeth cause neighbouring and opposing teeth to drift over time, leading to bite problems. A bridge holds everything in place from day one.
04
Difficulty chewing
Missing teeth put extra strain on the remaining ones when you eat. A bridge restores a balanced bite and means you can chew comfortably on both sides again.
05
Implants are not suitable
Dental implants are not always possible — due to bone density, health, or cost. A bridge achieves a very similar result without the need for surgery.
Restoring your smile
A gap in a visible part of your smile can affect how you feel day to day. A well-made bridge looks entirely natural and gives you back a complete, confident smile.
Missing a tooth?
Book an appointment and we'll assess the gap, talk through your options, and find the most comfortable way forward.
Your bridge appointment from start to finish
Examination and X-ray
We examine the gap and the surrounding teeth, and take X-rays to assess the supporting teeth and the bone beneath. We will walk you through exactly what we find and confirm a bridge is the right option before anything is started.
~10 minutesAbutment preparation and impression
Under local anaesthetic, we reshape the teeth on either side of the gap — called abutment teeth — so the bridge can anchor securely over them. An impression of the prepared teeth and the gap is then taken and sent to our dental laboratory, where your permanent bridge is custom-made.
~45 minutesTemporary bridge fitted
While your permanent bridge is being made, we fit a temporary bridge to protect the prepared teeth and fill the gap. Most patients find they can eat and speak normally between appointments. We will advise you on what to avoid while the temporary is in place.
~10 minutesPermanent bridge cemented
At your second appointment, we remove the temporary bridge and try in the permanent one. We check the fit, colour, and bite carefully before cementing it firmly in place. We will make any fine adjustments needed and give you full aftercare advice before you leave.
~30 minutesBridge vs implant
Both replace a missing tooth permanently and look completely natural. The right choice depends on your teeth, your bone, and your circumstances. Here is how they compare.
Dental Bridge
A fixed restoration anchored to the teeth on either side of the gap. No surgery required, and the whole process is complete in two appointments.
Dental Implant
A titanium post placed into the jaw bone, topped with a crown. The closest thing to a natural tooth root, and the longest-lasting solution available.

No. The area is fully numbed with a local anaesthetic before we prepare the abutment teeth, so you will not feel any pain during the procedure. You may feel some pressure as we work, but nothing sharp. Any mild sensitivity afterwards usually settles within a couple of days.
Two appointments. At the first, we prepare the supporting teeth, take an impression, and fit a temporary bridge. Your permanent bridge is made by our dental laboratory in the meantime. At the second visit, we check the fit and colour carefully before cementing it permanently in place.
With good oral hygiene and regular check-ups, a well-made bridge typically lasts between 10 and 15 years, and often longer. Keeping the area under and around the bridge clean is important — we will show you how to clean it properly at your appointment.
Yes. We use tooth-coloured porcelain matched to the shade and shape of your surrounding teeth. The result looks and feels completely natural — most patients find that nobody can tell they have a bridge at all.
Yes. Once your permanent bridge is cemented you can eat normally on both sides. While the temporary bridge is in place, we recommend avoiding very hard or sticky foods on that side. After the permanent bridge is fitted, the main thing to avoid is biting directly into very hard foods like bones or hard sweets.
The cost depends on the number of teeth being replaced and the materials used. We will give you a full, transparent quote at your consultation before any treatment begins. If you have questions about fees or payment options, our team is happy to help.
