What does a hygienist actually do?
A hygiene appointment is not just a polish. It is a thorough professional clean that removes the build-up your toothbrush cannot reach, combined with personalised advice to help you keep your gums healthy at home.
Plaque hardens into tartar over time, and once it has hardened, no amount of brushing will shift it. Our hygienist uses an ultrasonic scaler and fine hand instruments to remove it safely and thoroughly, including from below the gum line where it causes the most damage.
Regular hygiene visits are one of the most effective things you can do to keep your teeth for life.
Every appointment ends with a review of your home care routine. We will show you the right brushing technique, recommend the best interdental cleaning tools for your mouth, and give you honest, practical advice you can actually use.
The benefits of regular hygiene visits
A professional clean does more than leave your teeth feeling smooth. Here is what it actually does for your long-term health.
01
Healthier gums
Removing plaque and tartar from below the gum line reduces inflammation and bleeding. Healthy gums are the foundation your teeth depend on, and regular cleans are the single most effective way to protect them.
02
Tartar you cannot brush away
Once plaque hardens into tartar, no toothbrush or interdental brush can remove it. Only a professional clean can get rid of it. Left untreated, tartar drives gum disease and bone loss over time.
03
Fresher breath
Persistent bad breath is usually caused by bacteria hiding below the gum line and between teeth. A thorough clean removes the source rather than masking the symptom, leaving your breath genuinely fresher.
04
Surface stain removal
Tea, coffee, and red wine all leave surface staining over time. Polishing at the end of your hygiene appointment removes these marks and leaves your teeth noticeably brighter without any bleaching.
05
Early detection
Gum disease rarely causes pain until it is advanced. Regular hygiene visits mean we are checking your gum health every few months and catching any changes before they develop into something harder to treat.
06
Better home care
We look at where plaque is building up and show you exactly what to change. Whether it is your brushing technique or the right interdental tools for your mouth, you leave with advice that actually makes a difference.
When did you last have a professional clean?
If it has been more than six months, plaque will have had time to harden into tartar. The sooner you come in, the easier it is to keep on top of.
Scale & polish vs Airflow
Both are professional cleans, but they work differently. We will recommend the right one for your teeth at your appointment.
Scale & polish
The standard professional clean. An ultrasonic scaler breaks down tartar build-up above and below the gum line, followed by a polish to remove surface staining.
Airflow
A more advanced clean using a pressurised stream of warm water, fine powder, and air to remove staining, plaque, and biofilm from areas that traditional scaling struggles to reach.

Most patients find the appointment comfortable throughout. If your gums are inflamed or you have not had a clean for some time, you may feel some mild sensitivity during the scale. This is normal and settles quickly. If you are nervous, just let us know and we will go at a pace that suits you.
For most patients we recommend every three to six months, depending on your gum health and how quickly tartar builds up. If you have a history of gum disease, more frequent visits will help keep it under control. We will advise you on the right interval at your appointment.
A scale and polish uses an ultrasonic scaler to remove tartar, followed by a polish to lift surface staining. Airflow uses a pressurised mix of warm water, air, and fine powder to remove plaque, staining, and biofilm more gently and from areas that traditional scaling cannot reach as easily. We will recommend the most suitable option based on your teeth.
A professional clean removes surface staining from tea, coffee, red wine, and smoking, which can leave your teeth noticeably brighter. It is not the same as whitening treatment, which changes the natural shade of the tooth itself. If you are interested in whitening, we can discuss that separately.
Yes. A hygiene appointment focuses on cleaning and gum health, but it does not replace a dental examination. Your dentist checks for decay, oral cancer, bite issues, and other things your hygienist is not assessing. We recommend booking both on the same day where possible.
Hygiene appointments at Face Dental start from £65. Airflow treatment is priced separately. If you are on our monthly membership plan, hygiene visits are included as part of your plan. We will always confirm costs clearly before your appointment.
