The basics

What is a dental crown?

A dental crown is a custom-made cap that fits over a damaged, weakened, or broken tooth, restoring its shape, strength, and appearance. At Face Dental, we use tooth-coloured crowns that blend seamlessly with your natural teeth.

Crowns are used when a tooth is too damaged for a filling to be sufficient, for example after a large break, severe decay, or a root canal treatment. The crown encases the entire visible portion of the tooth above the gum line, protecting it from further damage and restoring it to full function.

A well-made crown is virtually indistinguishable from a natural tooth, in colour, shape, and how it feels when you bite.

Treatment typically takes two appointments. At the first, the tooth is shaped and an impression is taken. A temporary crown is fitted while your permanent crown is made. At the second appointment, the finished crown is checked for fit and colour before being permanently cemented in place.

Common reasons

When might you need a crown?

Crowns are used when a tooth is too damaged for a filling alone. They protect what remains and restore full function — often for many years.

01

Broken or fractured tooth

A significant break leaves a tooth structurally weak. A crown encases the remaining tooth, preventing further fracture and restoring it to normal shape and strength.

02

Severe decay

When decay is so extensive that a filling would not provide adequate support, a crown is the most reliable way to protect and rebuild the tooth.

03

Large or failing filling

A very large filling can weaken the surrounding tooth structure over time. If it cracks or fails, a crown is often the best long-term solution.

04

After root canal treatment

Teeth that have had root canal treatment become more brittle. A crown is usually recommended to protect the tooth and restore its bite function.

05

Worn down teeth

Grinding, acid erosion, or years of wear can reduce a tooth significantly. Crowns restore the height, shape, and function of severely worn teeth.

06

Discoloured or misshapen tooth

Where a tooth is heavily stained or has an unusual shape that cannot be corrected by other means, a crown can restore both its appearance and its function.

Examination and X-ray

Examination and X-ray

We examine the tooth and take an X-ray to assess the damage and confirm a crown is the right treatment. We will explain exactly what we have found and walk you through the options before proceeding.

02

Tooth preparation and impression

Tooth preparation

Under local anaesthetic, we reshape the tooth so the crown can fit over it securely. An impression is then taken and sent to our dental laboratory, where your permanent crown is made to match the shape and colour of your surrounding teeth.

Temporary crown fitted

Temporary crown

While your permanent crown is being made, we fit a temporary crown to protect the prepared tooth. This keeps the tooth comfortable and functional between appointments. Most patients find it straightforward to eat and speak normally with the temporary in place.

Permanent crown cemented

At your second appointment, we remove the temporary crown, check the fit and colour of the permanent one, and cement it firmly in place. We will check your bite carefully and make any fine adjustments before you leave. The result should feel completely natural.

Know the difference

Crowns vs veneers

Both can transform the look of a tooth, but they serve very different purposes. Here is how to tell which one you are likely to need.

No. The tooth is fully numbed with a local anaesthetic before we start, so you will not feel any pain during the procedure. You may feel some pressure while the tooth is being shaped, but nothing sharp or uncomfortable. Any mild sensitivity after the anaesthetic wears off usually settles within a day or two.

Crowns are fitted over two appointments. At the first, the tooth is prepared and an impression is taken. A temporary crown is fitted while your permanent crown is made by our dental laboratory. At the second appointment, the permanent crown is checked for fit and colour, then cemented in place.

With good oral hygiene and regular check-ups, a well-made crown typically lasts between 10 and 15 years, and often longer. How long it lasts depends on the location of the tooth, how you care for it, and whether you grind your teeth. We check your crowns at every routine appointment.

Yes. We use tooth-coloured porcelain crowns that are matched to the shade and shape of your surrounding teeth. The result looks and feels completely natural. Most people find that even their closest friends and family cannot tell which tooth has been crowned.

Yes, once the permanent crown is cemented you can eat normally. While you have a temporary crown in place, we recommend avoiding very hard, sticky, or chewy foods on that side, as temporaries are not as securely fixed as the permanent crown. We will give you full aftercare advice at each appointment.

The cost of a crown depends on the tooth being treated and the material used. We will give you a full, transparent quote at your consultation before any treatment begins. If you have any questions about fees or payment options, please do not hesitate to get in touch with our team.
