The basics

What happens at a check-up?

A check-up is much more than a quick look at your teeth. It is a thorough assessment of your whole mouth, giving us the chance to spot anything that needs attention before it becomes a problem.

Whole mouth assessed

We examine each tooth individually, check your gums for any signs of disease, and screen for early indicators of oral cancer. X-rays are taken when needed to check for decay or bone changes that are not visible to the naked eye.

Most problems are far easier and less expensive to treat when they are caught early. That is exactly what a check-up is for.

At the end of every appointment we will talk you through what we have found, give you an honest assessment of your oral health, and recommend any treatment if it is needed. There is no pressure, just a clear picture of where things stand.

What we look at

What we check for

A check-up covers far more than just your teeth. Here is everything we examine at every appointment.

Tooth examination 01

Teeth and decay

We examine every tooth for signs of decay, cracks, or wear. Catching a small cavity early means a simple filling rather than something far more involved later.

Gum health check 02

Gum health

We check for signs of gum disease, including redness, swelling, bleeding, and pocket depth around each tooth. Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss and is often painless in its early stages.

Oral cancer screening 03

Oral cancer screening

We examine the soft tissues of your mouth, including your tongue, cheeks, throat, and lips, for any unusual patches or changes. Early detection significantly improves outcomes.

04

X-rays

Where needed, we take X-rays to see what is happening between and beneath the teeth. They reveal decay, bone changes, and other issues that are invisible to the naked eye.

Bite and jaw check 05

Bite and jaw

We check how your teeth come together and look for signs of grinding, clenching, or jaw joint issues. These often go unnoticed but can cause significant wear and discomfort over time.

Existing restorations 06

Existing restorations

Fillings, crowns, bridges, and any other existing dental work are checked to make sure they are still in good condition and doing their job properly.

When did you last have a check-up?

If it has been more than a year, now is a good time to book. Most problems are far simpler to treat when they are found early.

Know the difference

Check-up vs hygiene appointment

They are often booked together, but they do different jobs. Both matter, and neither replaces the other.

It depends on your individual risk level. Some patients need to be seen every six months, others every twelve. We will recommend an interval that makes sense for your teeth and gum health based on what we find at your appointment.

Not automatically. A check-up is an examination carried out by your dentist. A hygiene appointment is a separate appointment with our hygienist, focused on removing plaque and tartar build-up. Many patients book both on the same day, which we would always recommend.

Not necessarily at every visit. We take X-rays when they are clinically needed, for example if we suspect decay between teeth, want to check bone levels, or if it has been a few years since your last set. We will always explain why we are recommending them before we proceed.

We will explain exactly what we have found, what it means, and what your options are. Nothing is done without your understanding and consent. If treatment is needed, we will give you a clear plan and pricing before you commit to anything.

Not at all, and you are certainly not alone. We see many patients who have not visited a dentist for some time, for all sorts of reasons. There is no judgement here. The important thing is that you have come in, and we will take things at a pace you are comfortable with.

Check-ups at Face Dental start from £55. If X-rays are needed these may be charged separately. We will always be upfront about costs before any additional work is carried out.
